How to really help families

1

Thursday, September 10, 2015

I have become very passionate about this lately and am very excited to share my thoughts and research with you! There has been lots of buzz lately about how to support families and how to support children especially. Many look to schools and public programs that help families in myriads of ways. But I am of the opinion that to truly support new families and children, we must start in the home. Of course we know conscientious parenting and stable home environments have better outcomes. But I think we need to back up just a tad. First of all, parents need to be IN the home to make a difference. And that brings me to family leave. And not the crappy unpaid leave most Americans deal with. I'm talking about solid, paid family leave.

Now I'm not a policy expert. I have no idea how long paid family leave should be. I just know American families deserve better. New mothers deserve better. Newborns deserve better. Fathers deserve better. Sick children deserve better.

Thanks (insert sarcasm) to the Family and Medical Leave Act, American workers get 12 weeks of unpaid leave to use after the birth of a child or to help a sick family member. Do you know anyone in their childbearing years that could afford to not receive an income for 1 month, let alone 3?

I've come to think about this topic more and more because of my experience with new moms at WIC. It's devastating to these new moms to have to return to work 1 or 2 weeks after birth because they have no other alternative. So I help her learn how to use a breast pump and send her out into the world. I feel terrible after these appointments because I know she is being cheated. Cheated out of a beautiful bonding experience with her newborn. Cheated out of a healthy recovery.

Our society is well-versed on the superiority of breastmilk. We know it's the best start for babies. But how do we support women in their breastfeeding relationship? We could help mom stay home with her new baby, help her learn how to breastfeed, let her recover without interruptions, ease her into this new and frightening phase of life. But what do we actually do? We give her a free breast pump. We tell her to get back to work (and don't ask for any help from the government!) We tell her to leave her precious new baby with someone else. We tell her to hook herself up to a machine. We tell her to sit still so she doesn't bleed on the office chairs.

Does that sound like supporting families to you? Does that sound like supporting children to you?

Recently, Netflix grabbed headlines because it announced its unlimited paid family leave policy. I'm happy that it got some attention and got some people talking. But it doesn't apply to all of their workers. The DVD side of the company does not get this benefit and neither do its part-time workers, so yet again, the poor are at a disadvantage. Yet again, a poor new mother is forced to go back work too early while her newborn is taken care of by someone else. Yet again, a poor new mother cannot get the hang of breastfeeding.

Some people like to complain that countries like Canada who have very generous paid leave laws (~1 year of paid leave) are too generous. But what you probably didn't know is that extensions of up to 50 weeks in paid leave is correlated with a 20% drop in infant deaths. Want to keep children alive? Give their parents paid leave:

"Research shows that paid leave can also be a matter of life and death for children. By charting the correlation between death rates and paid leave in 16 European countries, Christopher Ruhm, a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Virginia, found that a 50-week extension in paid leave was associated with a 20 percent dip in infant deaths. (The biggest drop was in deaths of babies between 1 month and 1 year old, though mortality of children between 1 and 5 years also decreased as paid leave went up.)" (source)

How did we become a society where what happens at the office completely trumps what is happening with your family? It disgusts me. How many grandpas and grandmas have told you if they could go back, they would choose work over family? And yet, business leaders across America continue to enforce the idea that work is life. When everyone truly knows in their hearts that family and relationships and hobbies and living is life. Anne Weisberg writes in the NYTimes, "we need to reimagine leadership so that the ideal workers are not the ones who stay at work the latest, but the ones who get all their work done and leave at a reasonable hour; they are not the ones who get on a plane on a moment’s notice, even with a nanny in tow, but the ones who figure out how to conduct the meeting without having to travel."

Most parents simply do not have the economic situation to stay home with their new babies like they envision. By putting solid paid family leave policies into place and changing the workplace culture to encourage parents to take the full leave, we will be truly supporting children and families.

What has been your experience with family leave after having a baby? How can we do better? How would your life be improved if we had a more generous paid family leave policy?

My favorite painting and an outing to the MOA at BYU

Last week we went to the new Carl Bloch exhibit at the MOA at BYU. Some of the paintings are on loan from a private castle/estate in Denmark and have never been loaned out before and will never be loaned out again. Pretty sweet we got to see them! I shared with Nate that while he feels closest to God outdoors, among His creations, I often feel closest to God viewing religious art (especially this one). Carl Bloch and others at this exhibit have a beautiful gift that speak to my soul. So glad we went.

Brian Kershisnik's Nativity
I loved seeing this painting too (I think it's part of their permanent collection). It's larger than life, literally. And I love that it gives a realistic portrait of Mary nursing, with midwives looking on (as I believe it is unlikely in a city as large as Bethlehem that she did it all alone) and Joseph's prayer of gratitude. I find it interesting to think about all the unmentioned people that must have been involved: family and friends that Mary & Joseph traveled with, the innkeeper, midwives etc etc. And that contrasted with what we can't see, the numberless angels singing praises to our newborn Lord. I would love to have this in our house. I haven't been able to find prints of this. Only reproductions for $1400+ soooo.....

We walked around a bit reminiscing with a mint brownie and old-fashioned donut. I made Nate drive all over campus so I could see the new buildings. Bridger enjoyed chasing the ducks! And while I am really jealous students now have a Chik-fil-a in the Cougareat, Nate and I agreed it's probably for the best it came after I graduated. I would have weighed 200 pounds.

While in the Cougareat, I had some awkward eye contact with an old flame from before I met Nate. I couldn't help smile as we walked past, because here I am with my hunky husband with our adorable toddler on his shoulders. Just a good moment once again realizing I am so very happy with this path I have chosen.

Also, I am so excited to take Bridger to the renovated Bean Life Museum this spring! It's gonna look amazing! I took some paparazzi photos as we drove by.

Sneak peak of our house

This has been fun to style. It's a work in progress. Which basically explains the rest of the house really.

Curtains are up! In the bedroom at least. It's nice waking up to the sunlight!

Kitchen. Loving all the cabinet space!

TJMax finds. Got $100 off that trunk because of cosmetic damage. Just wish we could find a large version of that rug.

Our couch finally came! Nate had to take off the door for it to fit, but we're just glad it's here! When they carried it through the door, it just kept coming and coming and coming. It's longer than we realized! We'll probably have to take it out in pieces when we move again. ;) (From the RC Willey Outlet store if you were wondering).

Couldn't leave out the neighbors.

New baby. Saw this little girl (I think!) running through the snow on Saturday. So beautiful.

Also, our little baby is everywhere now! After setting him down to crawl around I have twice found him again sitting up! Sitting up isn't new, but getting there by himself is! Time to really baby-proof this house!

Bits of happiness: BIG happiness!

This guy has a JOB!
Something to definitely be grateful for!
After 4+ months of unemployment/underemployment...we are thrilled!
It's not his dream job (does anyone have their dream job these days?) but he is really excited about it!

And seeing my husband finally have the reward after years of hard work is incredibly gratifying.
He doesn't like when I brag about him, so I'll stop right there.

It's been a hard few months, but things are looking up!
Also, after we save up until the beginning of the new year, looks like we will be back in Provo.

Check out this quote I saw yesterday. So true!

P.S. The quote behind Nate reads, "work for your dreams." So fitting.

American Fork Canyon + Alpine Loop

Monday, October 8, 2012

Ever since Nate proposed, I have begged him to take me to the spot again. Last week, he finally agreed. So we packed up some food and flannel, along with Bridger in the old Ford. The fall colors were so gorgeous. I could literally feel the fresh mountain air increasing my dopamine levels. Being in the mountains really makes me happy!

But our delight was short-lived however. As we lumbered up the dirt and gravel packed switchbacks, we began to be aware that this old girl might not make it to the top. We lusted after the four-wheelers and all wheel drive Jeeps that raced past us. Thinking of the romantic memories we would be missing if we turned around, I urged Nate to keep going. After awhile even I conceded to defeat.

We settled on a picnic on the shores of Tibble Creek Reservoir. We snacked and basked in the mountain air. Bridger nursed as I eavesdropped on what could have been a good episode of a Latin soap opera. What I thought at first was a mother and son, turned out to be divorcing couple. (That is if my 8 credits of university Spanish are still up to par).
Yes, I've had this hoodie since 10th grade.

We ended the day driving back down through the Alpine Loop. (See last year on the Loop).

Bridger, I hope you are getting used to these mountain adventures! Many more to come kiddo!

Living in luxury

I'm sitting out on the porch in a comfy chair with Bridger content and asleep in his sling as we listen to a waterfall...yeah I think we are really gonna like our new apartment.

We have been gradually moving out of our Wymount apartment the past several days. Nate says I stress him out too much so I'm not allowed to help him move or clean out anymore. That's fine with me! :) He does a great job with things on his own schedule. I'm just a planner and to-do list kind of person. Nate's laid-back style works for him just great though.

Thanks to some relatives in the area, we have moved into their basement apartment for an incredible monthly rent. They have a gorgeous home and yard (yes, with a waterfall). We are super blessed. I was just beside myself with happiness as I loaded our dishwasher last night. And having our own washer and dryer is a definite plus. No more laundromats for us! (For now).

As nice as this place is, we hope we aren't here more than 2-3 months. By that time, Nate will hopefully have a good full-time job and we can move somewhere more permanent. But for now we can enjoy this furnished apartment and spread out in our California king-size bed!

As soon as we get our desktop set up (where I upload photos), I'll post some photos!

When things are free

During college and especially now during our season of unemployment, we are especially grateful for free ways to entertain ourselves. Here is what we have been enjoying for free lately:

Last week the instructor pulled a no-show for my breastfeeding class at a local hospital. As a way to apologize, the hospital sent me two free movie tickets in the mail just a few days later. No complaints there. We used them to watch The Dark Knight Rises, which we LOVED!!

At Riverwood's Christmas celebration, I won a gift certificate to Soel Boutique. Nate used it to buy me these awesome mocs for Christmas.

At the same event, I also won $100 to use at Provo Beach Resort. That's a lot of money for a glorified arcade. We still haven't used it up yet. So far, we have used it for countless games of Skee Ball and several trips on their ropes course.

Other things we love that are free:
Walks around the neighborhood
A visit to BYU's Museum of Art
The public library
All of the many awesome city parks in Provo and Orem

life lately

Our life lately has consisted of a good amount of waiting.

Waiting for baby of course.
Waiting to hear back from jobs.
Waiting for answered prayers about where it is we need to move our family.
Just waiting.

I'm not very good at waiting.

I want the baby now.
I want Nate to hear back from employers today.
And I want to know now where it is we should go.

And yet I know deep down that this time in our lives will quickly pass. The baby will come within 3 weeks. The Lord is looking out for us. Nate will get a job. And soon the answer of where to go will be so obvious, perhaps we will wonder why we even asked in the first place.

So we will wait. Patiently.
And try to remember that we are becoming better sailors because of all this.

Loving Canada, eh?

I have so many photos from this past week that I want to share! I had a blast visiting family in Florida. I just wish Nate could have come! He was pretty jealous he missed out on so much.

This trip was very much about Kacey, my little brother. He graduated high school, seminary and got his mission call, all during my 6-day stay!

Here are some photos from mom's phone at his Baccalaureate:

 Buddies :)

The "little kids," not so little anymore!

The next night was his high school graduation on Memorial Field.

More family photos and Florida beauty coming soon.

P.S. Family, I am currently uploading all these photos and more to my Shutterfly share site!

So far this week I've...

...chased around preschoolers.
...eaten some delicious strawberries.
...done laundry (I know, my life is so thrilling).
...actually made a real dinner for the first time in too long.
...realized I go to FL in just over a week!!
...caught up on posts for Dresses for Change.
...and started on a fun new project for baby:

Based on this idea.

I'll let you know how it goes. I think I will chronicle my pregnancy as well as his birth and then sometime after that I'll have it printed.

The joys and pains of sailing

Sunday, May 6, 2012

Last weekend, Nate and I wanted to head out to Utah Lake for a little sail. Luckily, Scott and Erika came along or we would have been in big trouble. I won't re-hash all the details since Scott wrote a pretty good description already. Read Scott's version of the day's events on Erika's blog

This was the only photo taken while we were out of the harbor since I immediately had to throw my camera in its bag for safekeeping as the wind doubled in speed.

Nate and Scott with the broken tiller.

Erika and I. Just happy to be alive ;)

Wish I knew how to get the light off your eye Erika! But I like this photo a lot :)

Thanks for another adventure Harriette!
