Living the dream

Nate was recently offered a great position at work! We were so excited; he's been working really hard for it! That excitement took us up to Midway where we bought a 1990 Jeep Wrangler! We've wanted one forever. And it has opened up so much of the wilderness that we didn't have access to before. The first place we went was my favorite place in the world...the part of American Fork Canyon where Nate proposed!!
June 2010, just moments before he proposed (he's reaching for the ring!)

The same spot 4 years & 2 kids later! We are still so in love with each other and this beautiful place!

This is the camp spot we hung out at the day he proposed. Still gorgeous! Can't wait to come back and really camp.

Having the Jeep is making me think that maybe we don't have to have our cabin in the woods. I can deal with subdivision living if we have more access to more of the mountain like this.

Y'all. I am most alive among the tall trees. And I hope by dragging the kids along at an early age that they learn to love it too.

Hope in Marriage

A recent Gallup Poll, Values and Beliefs showed that 89% of respondents believe that extramarital affairs are morally wrong. That's not exactly what the media displays is it? I was happy to these results as well as that 64% of respondents believe pornography is morally wrong. In addition, 51% believe abortion is morally wrong. See? Things aren't as bad as we think they are. Things could always be better, but they aren't so bad.

Book Reviews: This Is Not The Story You Think It Is

This Is Not The The Story You Think It Is...
Laura Munson

**Spoiler alert!**
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I really enjoyed this book. I did study marriage and family in school after all! This was the first memoir I've read. Because I read the article she wrote, I knew the basic outline of the story, including the ending. I was just excited to learn more about her experience.

Basically, her husband of fifteen years comes to her to let her know that he wants to leave and that he doesn't love her anymore. Instead of fighting, begging, pleading or a multitude of other responses, she remained calm. She told him she did not believe him. She chose to believe that his problem was about himself and not their marriage. For a whole summer, she chose daily to be happy and to create beauty with their children, despite the increasing absence of her husband.

Her writing is clear and most of all, honest. I started this book thinking she was never angry at him. But she was. Many times. But she just chose to have better reactions than those based on her emotions. And what was so beautiful about this story is that she continued to love him. Unconditionally. She doesn't make him into the villan. And I really respect her for that.

At the end of the summer, he starts figuring his life out and coming out of his funk. The reader learns throughout the story that his issues had to do with his lack of pride. Not the evil kind. The kind that pushes you to do your best and be happy with your work. Confidence might be a better description. He had lost confidence in his abilities as a provider and that affected all of his relationships. As he realized what his real problem was and through giving true service to others, he found his way back.

She makes it very clear that this is not the "magic pill" for every struggling relationship. And it would have been very, very different if he had been unfaithful. But I think she is really onto something here. You will never go wrong with unconditional love and forgiveness being a part of your marriage.

"Each marriage starts with two built-in handicaps. It  involves two imperfect people. Happiness can come to them only through their earnest effort. Just as harmony comes from an orchestra only when its members make a concerted effort, so harmony in marriage also requires a concerted effort. That effort will succeed if each partner will minimize personal demands and maximize actions of loving selflessness." -Russell M. Nelson October 2008 General Conference

My favorite chapter is entitled, "Indian Summer" and begins on page 310 of my copy. She illustrates the "pickle jar philosophy" that is especially applicable in marriage:

A friend of her's "says a whole hosts of tensions can be solved in her marriage when she hands her husband the pickle jar. She's having a hard time opening the pickle jar. She passes the jar to her husband. He opens it. She says, smiling, 'Yeah, well, I loosened it for you.' But they both know it was a meeting of intention...All she had to do was state her need. Acknowledge his 'strength.' Ask for his help. Get out of his way. And receive what he had to give. How is she powerless? She's not."

Of all the classes and papers and books I have read about marriage, somehow I missed this. When you each are working towards a goal--whether it be large or small--each partner must acknowledge the other's strengths in order to have a happy ending.

**I recommend this to everyone! Married or not, this will help with all your relationships!

P.S. Watch out, she's got quite a sailor's mouth at times!

It's official.

I'm finally a Parr.

I've been meaning to change my name since we got married.
But only got the motivation to do so when I realized that if I didn't act fast, our child would have a different last name than me.
How embarrassing.

It is a little strange to lose my maiden name. That's been my identity my whole life ya know? I will always be an Aukema, in spirit and personality, I'm sure ;)

Next up: new drivers license.

P.S. We loved General Conference today! Can't wait for tomorrow :)

Valentines

2

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

As is our tradition, we laughed at typical Valentines traditions and ate at JCW's for dinner last night. Last year, we ate at J Dawgs. The year before, we mimicked our first date by going to Comedy Sportz and eating at a dingy pizza place. No flowers, no chocolates, just us. And that's what I really love.

First Anniversary

0

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

I can't believe I didn't write a post about our first anniversary. We didn't do anything special since we wanted to spend time with my family while they were in town. But it had some highlights:

1. My parents were really nice to carry our cake out here so we could enjoy that tradition. Unfortunately this particular cake did not hold up so well. Nate thought it tasted terrible, I was pretty neutral. I had this whole plan to take photos while we ate it and have this glorious post about it. Nope. I didn't take one photo. It was pretty mangled anyway.

2. Eating at Wendys on the way to Park City.

3. And going out for a little date to Cold Stone.

Our 6-month anniversary totally trumps this one. (Funny that we were in Park City for both!)

We were comparing our before-marriage lives to our current life and we easily decided that we are both so much happier. Even compared to when we were dating and engaged. Marriage is the best invention ever. I'm so happy I chose the man I did!

Kennedy's Bridal Shower

Monday, October 24, 2011

On Friday, my friends Sam, Mel and I hosted a bridal shower for our good friend Kennedy at Pizza Pie Cafe. (Which may seem like an odd place to have a shower but it was fun and plus--no clean up!)

Thumb print sign in idea from here. My husband the closet artist drew the tree and the states on the chalkboard.

I seriously had the funnest time throwing together little arrangements with my growing collection of glass jars. Flowers from here.

Sam made these cute little cards for words of wisdom to the newlyweds.

 Opening presents...

 The queen herself :)

Ken and her old roomies :)

Mel, Sam, Kennedy and I. (Missing Heather!)

Giving little Ezekiel a some love!

I couldn't resist...we all have diamonds now! ;)

Congrats to Kennedy and Trever! Wishing yall an eternity of bliss!

Marriage: Autumn Date Nights

Monday, October 10, 2011

In spirit of strengthening our marriages and relationships, here are some fun date night ideas for fall in the Utah Valley area. Some we have done, others we would like to do this season.

1. Sundance moon lit lift rides. This season's last ones are tomorrow and the next day!We did this last fall and loved it. Just remember to bundle up. Bring your own hot chocolate if you can, they have expensive prices. You can also take the scenic lift during the day for awesome views of the mountains.

2. Run through a corn maze and pick some pumpkins. We haven't gone before, but plan on it. There are several options in our area: Corn Belly's, Hee Haw Farms, PaysonSantaquin.

4. Take a picnic and drive the Alpine Loop or the Nebo Loop.

5. Carve pumpkins! Always a favorite. (Pretty, scary and funny)

What are you favorite kind of date nights?

Happy fall y'all!

Training my husband

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

This is our little chalk board that we often use for to-do lists. And when I say we, I mean me. Nate is anti-to-do list. But just take a look at that last bullet. Totally not me. My jaw dropped when I saw this and I thought, "I have got him trained!" :) Anyone who knows Jeff Foxworthy knows what I'm talking about.

But seriously, this is a big deal. Let's be honest, we all have little things that we want our spouses to appreciate a little more. And I'll have to hand it to Nate, he has really gotten me to love the outdoors. And I am slowly making baby steps with to-do lists and shopping. :)

More about marriage.

P.S. Yes, we really are going to graduate! Yay!

Scott & Erika Tie the Knot!

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

We had a lovely time at Scott and Erika's reception last week. Like us, they had the reception before they got married. No stress on your wedding day!

Aren't they gorgeous?? Unfortunately, I did not get many other photos as I was too busy stuffing my face with cake balls ;)

We also attended their sealing on Friday afternoon. I've never been to one in the Salt Lake Temple and as always, the temple was such a treat.

Being in the temple is a great blessing! I love attending sealings because you can replay your own wedding day as you listen. Of course, I cried the whole way through it. The temple is such a beautiful experience!

Erika's little brother McKay made me smile. He was so eager to give his big sister a big hug when her and Scott exited the temple. Precious.

We couldn't be more happy for Scott and Erika. There is not a better match for our Scott than Erika. Here's to an eternity of bliss to the new Mr. and Mrs. Nelson! :)

P.S. The first day of class went great, one of my classes was cancelled! Woo!

One Year Later

Sunday, June 12, 2011

One year ago, Nate carried me into the mountains.

He cooked me bacon and grits over a fire.

We sat next to a beautiful river and spoke of life and love.

He showed me some of the most beautiful scenes I have ever beheld.

And he asked me the easiest question I have ever answered ♥

This past year has brought me more joy than I thought possible.
I can't wait to experience for what eternity holds for us!

P.S. Since I kind of botched Nate's thoughtfully planned out proposal by kneeling/squatting with him, here is the staged photo:

And here is him looking nervous and reaching for my ring:

Rules and other Randomness

I found this photo on my phone from last spring! Hurry up spring!

After learning in class today about how technology has altered our relationships...I am on a Facebook fast. My new rule (for myself) is only Facebook once a week. Along the same lines, Nate and I agreed to not watch Netflix or Hulu (we don't have a TV) during dinner and that we will not bring our phones to the table either. I think this is a good habit to have especially when we start our family.

I'm pretty excited about these goals and how they will change (at least in a small way) how I think about and live in relationships.

P.S. I'd be happy to grow up in this barn.

P.P.S. Ruffled Blog was my undying inspiration while we were engaged, so I loved seeing this adorable backyard wedding! P.S. I applied for a job with Ruffled this weekend! It's only a dream, but who knows?!

The reception was so perfect thanks to our wonderful families!

Marriage

What a great idea this marriage concept is. Think of it...the one person you love the most is there. With you. Every day.

He is there for dinner.
And still there when the dishes need to be done.
And still there when it is time for bed.
And yet he is still there when your make up is off.
And then he smiles at you which makes you wonder why in the world we had to wait so long (20 years! or 25 years!) to find this perfect and joyful union.

And the best part...he's right next to you in the morning as you start your day.

Happy one month and 3 days wedding anniversary babe!

We're married!!

On December 22, 2010, Nathan and I were sealed for time and eternity in the Orlando Florida LDS temple! We honeymooned in the Caribbean on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Being married to so amazing. I love waking up to the love of my life every morning!
