Buy my bike!

After so much hard work, I am sad we have to sell my bike! But it is a little tall for me, so I'll just have to find one that fits me better. Here is my ad on KSL and you can read more info on how we restored it here. We are asking $200. Leave a comment if you are interested! 

Bike Update: Part V

Finally, an update on the finished bike!! (Part I, II, III, IV)

We actually finished it in early December. I used it coming back and forth to campus the last few weeks of class. We have also taken a few bike rides when the weather has been nice. It's actually slightly too big for me, so we might sell it sometime. But Nate worked so hard on it! I don't want to let it go!

For those interested, here is the (approximate) cost breakdown of this project:

Bike $40

Spray paint (3 cans) $15

Handlebar tape $13

Seat $23

Cables $40

Wheels $34 and $36
Tubes $10
Tires $30
Chain $5
Pedals $10
Total cost: $256

That total sounds like a lot! But we spread it out over several months and now it's basically a brand new bike!

Nate did most of the work himself except putting on the wheels and chain since he didn't have all the right tools. We took it to Outdoors Unlimited on BYU campus for those few things. It would have cost us about $20 for labor, but they took forever so they charged us nothing :)

This past Saturday, Utah decided to be April instead of January and gave us an amazingly warm day. So we took a little cruise on the Provo River trail.

Just a few minutes after this was taken, Nate stepped on and broke these sunglasses! :( I always mourn the loss of a good pair!

Bike Update: Part III

In case you didn't hear, we are restoring an old bike. See original post here and the first update here. I made a goal to publish a post about it each week in order to motivate us. Well....that has not exactly happened, but we are close! While this was begun as a fun couples project that we could bond over, it has turned into a fun project for Nate. Yep, I have not helped as much as I should! Although,  I have gotten down and dirty and helped sand down the gears etc. So our couple-bonding hope may not be completely lost!

Here is what we have completed since the last update:

1. Finished sanding

2. Painted, including a clear proctectant coat.

3. Purchased the bike seat, handlebar tape and brake cables.

Bike Update Part II

 In case you missed it, we bought a vintage bike that needs some extra TLC. Check out the original post here. Our goals for this week on the bike were to: (1) take detailed shots of the bike so we could put it back together more easily (I won't bore you with those photos); (2) take it apart (as seen above); and (3) we started sanding. 

 Here is the color we chose. I think it will be a little darker with several (2?) coats.

Check out that candy apple red! The original color of the bike. Why would anyone paint over that red with that dull blue? Strange.

Bike goals for this week:

1. Finish sanding

2. Paint

3. Order needed parts

P.S. Wait! It's October already?? How did that happen?

Weekend update + New project

We had a big weekend full of adventures!

Crafting. Borrowed Holly's sewing machine and tailored some old khakis using these tips. They actually turned out pretty well.

Music. We went to The Brocks concert at Sammy's. A.m.a.z.i.n.g. Seriously. Go buy their CD.

Broadcast. Watched it. Loved it.

Celebrating. We celebrated the engagement of Sam & Kyle at Olive Garden. Yay for marriage! 

Swap meet. Well I didn't buy anything at the swap meet. Although I should have. There was a great $5 Gap sweater that I wasn't quite sure about...until someone else bought it. Darn it. 

But, on the bright side, we got something even cooler. 

We got this old Schwinn at a yard sale right after the swap meet for $40.

 Obviously, it's gonna be a BIG project. So in order to motivate ourselves, we have decided to have a weekly post for updates on our progress with the bike. I'll try and save links and other online resources that we use and post those as well.

Nate is taking care of the mechanics and all that stuff. But I am excited to pick out the handlebar tape and paint color. I really like this color scheme:

This week's bike goals:

1. Take photos of everything on the bike so we can put it back together.

2. Take it apart.

3. Start sanding the rust and paint down.

Don't bike people just look so happy?

I want venture to say that the quality of life goes up exponentially once you are a biker.
But that I do not know for sure because I am still without a bike.
That's ok, one more thing to add to my wishlist!
